Preparatory Department

Years 3-6

Above all at Oakfields we want children to have gained positive learning experiences in our school, to be equipped when they leave here at 11 years of age, with self confidence, respect for others and a love of learning.

As children move into different phases of their lives and different phases withing the school, we focus on developing the skills that they have learnt, whilst ensuring the new experiences are made available and that broadening perspectives are catered for.

Boys and girls are admitted to Year 3 either as a progression from our younger age groups or as a result of assessment days.  Our pupils study the core subjects of the National Curriculum of English, Mathematics and Science and the foundation subjects of History, Geography, French, Music, Art and Design, Technology including I.C.T and a wide variety of sports in the PE/Games curriculum. Religious Education is taught in a non-denominational way. We believe in developing a well-rounded child and give opportunities for;

  • Extra lessons in music, including playing an instrument, orchestra, music theory and choir
  • Physical education through specialist coaching in tennis, swimming, games and extra curricular instruction in football and netball.
  • The arts, including drama, dance, art/design are extra curricular activities.
  • Children are given help to prepare them for selective entrance examinations and interviews at 11+. All our pupils take Key stage 2 tests in English, Mathematics and Science,

Our school believes strongly in helping our pupils learn to take responsibility for themselves and their actions, their fellow pupils, the school and the wider world. To encourage this we have;

  • A school council with elected representatives from each year group.
  • A house system, with four school houses each with a House Captain.
  • A Friendship Squad of year 5 pupils who have been appointed to help other children, including those in the pre-preparatory school, to enjoy happy playtimes.
  • Prefects, chosen from pupils in year 6 who have special duties and responsibilities in the school.
  • A Head Boy, Head Girl and Sports Captains.
  • Librarians
