Children learn an abundance
of things during these precious pre-school years.
And the best way to learn is by doing, by
experiencing and exploring the world around them.
Children already have their own system in place to
ensure they learn all the skills they will need in
the future. It is called PLAY. “Play is children’s
work and the means whereby they grow and develop”.
So said Dr. Maria Montessori, on who’s educational
philosophy our school is based. How right she was!
Children need play – but the play must be well
planned, with clear aims, using good quality
materials, both natural and man-made, to offer
children the optimum opportunities for educational
and physical growth and development. Our staff are
highly skilled and qualified to promote all areas of
children’s learning.
The work during the nursery years is planned to
promote the Early Learning Goals for the Foundation
Stage of Learning. Children learn through activities
on particular topics or themes. We welcome the
contribution parents can make to help us provide a
quality environment for our children.
Our environment is structured, both inside and out
of doors, to give children free access to activities
and to choose things they would like to do. This
choice is respected. Children may be invited to join
in an activity but never compelled to do so. The
interest and involvement in their ‘work’ is always
more important than the finished product.
During the year before children enter ‘big’ school,
whether they are in Kindergarten or still in
Nursery, children will encounter a more structured
programme designed to provide the essential building
blocks of literacy and numeracy.
Before you bring your child to nursery you will have
had the opportunity to visit together. When your
child starts, it is advisable to make the first
sessions short and gradually increase the time until
a full day is achieved. We always encourage parents
to say good-bye to their child and to reassure them
that you will be returning later in the day. If your
child becomes distressed or is unwell during the day
you will be called to collect them.
We set high expectations for behaviour through
encouraging and praising good behaviour. We
encourage children to respect themselves, each
other, adults and property. The rules we have are
simple and applied fairly and consistently. In cases
of unacceptable behaviour we will always discuss
ways forward with parents.
We offer a nurturing and emotionally stable base in
our nursery where care and education coexist,
enabling every aspect of a young child’s development
to progress at their own pace.
Parents are kept informed about their child and all
aspects of the nursery on a regular basis both
informally and formally through written reports.
Staff are happy to discuss your child at any time.
