Music
At Oakfields, all children in the main school receive weekly class music lessons. Infant-aged classes have a 30 minute lesson each week, plus a 25 minute singing session all together. Junior classes receive a 45 minute lesson, plus a singing session. From Year 3 upwards, all children learn the recorder in an additional music lesson. The recorder is taught in small ability groups.
We have a well equipped music room including hand-held percussion instruments for smaller children. We have a range of special effects instruments such as the autoharp, swanee whistle, vibraslap, 25-note wind chime set and the flexatone. There is also a class set of the following: xylophones & glockenspiels, drums, multi-cultural instruments, keyboards and steel pans.
In addition to curriculum music, we offer instrumental teaching on flute, clarinet, violin, piano and keyboard. These lessons are optional. Children may also attend lessons where they are taught the rudiments of Music Theory.
We hold concerts each year. At Christmas there is a whole-school Carol Concert. Infant and Junior departments each have individual music concerts towards the end of the year. Lunchtime concerts are also put on twice yearly by the Junior Department. An additional end of year musical production is performed by the Juniors on alternate years.
There are two music clubs at Oakfields who practise in lunchtime or after school: an orchestra and a choir.
