Preparatory Department

Years 3-6

Boys and girls are admitted in the September following their seventh birthday either as a progression from our pre-preparatory department or as a result of tests taken the previous March.

Our pupils study the three basic core subjects of the National Curriculum of English, Mathematics and Science and the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Languages, Music, Art and Design, Technology including I.C.T, and Physical Education. Religious Education is taught in a non-denominational way. We aim to develop children's moral values, tolerance and understanding of our fellow beings through our Personal, Social and Health Education programme, together with matters relating to health and hygiene.

We believe in developing a well-rounded child and give opportunities for;

  • Extra lessons in music, including playing an instrument, orchestra, music theory and choir
  • Physical education through specialist coaching in tennis, swimming, games and extra curricular instruction in football and netball.
  • The arts, including drama, dance, art/design are extra curricular activities.
  • Children are given help to prepare them for selective entrance examinations and interviews at 11+. All our pupils take Key stage 2 tests inEnglish, Mathematics and Science,

Our school believes strongly in helping our pupils learn to take responsibility for themselves and their actions, their fellow pupils, the school and the wider world. To encourage this we have;

  • Regular times in class where issues can be discussed.
  • A school council with elected representatives from each year group.
  • A house system, with six school houses each with a House Captain.
  • A Friendship Squad of year 5 pupils who have been appointed to help other children, including those in the pre-preparatory school, to enjoy happy playtimes.
  • Prefects, chosen from pupils in year 6 who have special duties and responsibilities in the school.
  • A Head Boy, Head Girl and Sports Captains.
